Online Bingo Terminology

Online bingo is a complex game with its own set of terminology, acronyms and even specific rules. For players interested in the game, it is an unspoken expectation that they learn the ropes before playing. And while the online bingo industry is more than willing to help out fellow players, the basics are a requirement for acceptance.

The basic terms are as follows: the caller is the person or computer that calls out the bingo numbers and the card is the play area that contains 24 numbers and one free space. The free space is on every bingo card (tangible or online) and it counts towards a player’s winning pattern.

A game room is a room that hosts a single or small group of bingo games. This makes it easier for online players to chat with other players of the same game. Game rooms tend to be small because players and online bingo operators prefer to split the games into groups.

A jackpot in a bingo game tends to be the largest prize and is won by achieving a difficult winning pattern such as a blackout (the whole card). If there are multiple winners, the prize money is divided evenly among all of them. Finally, the winning pattern is a specified group of numbers that allows players to win. These can be horizontal or vertical lines, diagonal lines and the aforementioned blackout, which is the entire card.
