Online Operators See Financial Results from World Cup

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

This year’s World Cup undoubtedly brought an unprecedented amount of activity to online gaming websites. However, up until now, operators have had yet to truly see the effects of the increase in traffic and business and a new study reveals just how successful the World Cup betting period was.

This year, popular online gaming websites with sportsbooks saw nearly a 30% profit increase since 2009. Despite all of the legal issues, which were thought to have hindered the development of the online gambling community, the World Cup helped to balance out the market. Rather than seeing an overall decrease in 2010 due to legislative battles, the online gaming industry saw a massive increase.

One of the biggest developments in the sportsbetting world was the addition of in-game play, which is believed to have also influenced this year’s success of the industry. In-game betting allows players to make wagers while games are currently being played. This creates a great deal more excitement, as the odds continually change as the game progresses. Sites that offered this type of betting performed far better than more basic online gaming destinations.

Industry insiders expect that next year, profits will decrease, as 2011 will not be host to any large scale sporting events. So, it will be interesting to see how operators plan on making up for the loss.
