After review from the European Court of Justice Netherlands’ government recently decided to uphold its current ban on online gambling. However, now that a new government is in place, things have changed, as the politicians in power are now considering the option of legalizing and regulating the activity.
It has been estimated that more than 500 000 Dutch citizens gamble at unregulated online casinos every year, contributing millions of dollars to illegal gaming operators. The new Dutch government believes that it could cash in on the lucrative industry for the benefit of the country’s people by granting licenses to operators and taxing the income. It would be following in the footsteps of other European countries that have done so recently, and would certainly boost the Netherlands’ economy.
Recently, a report was published, outlining the positive and negative aspects of regulating online casino games. They specific reasons were not released, but the report itself seems to have swayed the government towards legislation. In fact, land-based casinos are even supporting the idea.
Normally, in most countries, land-based operators fear that online casinos will steal business away from them, but Dutch operators believe that regulating online gambling will cut back on illegal gambling.
