Canadian Provinces Oppose Online Gambling.

The topic of online gambling can be quite controversial, as every politician has a different opinion on the activity.

Around the world, governments are beginning to see the benefits of legalizing and regulating online gambling by launching government-regulated online casinos. While the prospect provides countries, provinces and states with additional tax revenue, several Canadian provinces have spoken out against this strategy.

In the Maritime province of Nova Scotia, Premier David Dexter has stated that the legalization of online gambling would cause more harm than good. He shares a somewhat antiquated perspective that easier access to gambling would mean an increase in gambling addiction, however, studies have proved that there is no positive correlation between these two variables.

In Prince Edward Island, politicians have taken a more open-minded approach. Rather than following in the footsteps of British Columbia, who opened its own government-regulated online gambling website, PEI has decided to find a way to regulate existing online casinos. This way, the province is not required to bear the burden of operating its own website; rather, PEI can earn tax revenue solely by requiring players to pay taxes on their winnings at online casinos.
