Controversy Over Spain Gambling Laws

Monday, November 8th, 2010 - Emily W.

Many countries in Europe are at odds when it comes to online gambling laws, and Spain has become one of them. Currently, the federal and regional governments have differing views on the way that online gambling regulation should be handled in the country, and it doesn’t seem as though the problem will be solved any time soon.

Spain needs to make a decision about regulating the industry to make it profitable for the country at large, but is currently out of ideas. The National Lottery, Loterias y Apuestas has actually resorted to stalling online gambling regulation, in order to obtain more time to think of a new strategy. As offshore online gambling sites are already causing gambling fans in the country to spend their money elsewhere, the lottery must devise a plan that will not only bring customers back but also contribute tax revenue.

In addition, regional governments want a bigger role in regulating online gambling once the activity is legalized. However, the federal government has not made a decision on that aspect yet, further stalling legislation. At this rate, Spain’s online gambling reform will not take place in 2011 as was previously planned; instead, industry experts predict it will not happen until the end of 2012.
