Poland currently upholds one of the strictest online gambling bans in Europe, and is about to get even more serious with a new legislation.
Rather than choosing to regulate online gambling , the government has decided to ban it, stating that it is detrimental to society. However, online casinos gain twice as much traffic as land-based betting shops in Poland, indicating that it is becoming an increasingly popular activity. In just one year, online casinos saw an increase in traffic of more than 20%.
This increase should have force politicians to see the profitable opportunities available in the industry. However, it has only forced them to implement even stricter laws. According to the new legislation, anyone who is found to be using an online gambling site or advertising an online casino will be persecuted.
This has been a controversial decision, as many countries are currently using online gambling revenue to fund government programs and pay off deficits. Poland has yet to see that the activity could be benefit to the country at large, but it players continue to spend their money at offshore locations, the government may be inclined to consider regulating its own online gambling website.
