Yesterday, Sports Minister Hugh Robertson Unveiled the new mass participation legacy program for the London 2012 Olympics. As part of the new initiative, the UK national lottery will invest £135 million in the games to create a legacy from the upcoming summer games.
Most of the money will be spent on upgrading sports facilities across the UK. There will be a great deal of recruiting, as the program will train and employ 40 000 sports leaders who will organize grassroots sports activities. They will also be responsible for creating new opportunities for athletes, including a new coaching course called Sportivate, which is targeted towards young adults. Funding will also go towards helping disabled athletes, who face many barriers in the sporting world.
"It delivers on the bid pledge of enabling more people of all ages and abilities to play sports”, says Robertson. “There will be opportunities for everyone to get involved."
Some have argued that the funding will not be sufficient to support the program’s vision, but Robertson believes the funding was more than generous. Despite tough economic times, a £135 donation is huge and demonstrates the governments dedication to the sports industry.
