New Jersey Legalizes Online Gambling

The United States is one of the strictest countries when it comes to online gambling. While many countries across Europe are considering legalizing and taxing the activity, America’s federal government believes it should stay illegal. However, one state has found a way to circumvent the country’s online gambling ban.

The UIGEA (Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act) is a federal ban that restricts players from making financial transactions with online gambling operators. Over the years since the law was passed in 2006, dozens of online gambling operators have faced legal troubles for supposedly defying the law.

Now, New Jersey has found a way to legalize online gambling within the state without having to worry about breaking any federal laws. New Jersey’s legislation, S490, will legalize online gambling only in the state of New Jersey. All operators must be based in the state, as well, keeping all activity within state lines. Because the activity is regulated on a local level, the federal government cannot charge anyone in the state for taking part in gambling online.

The proposed taxation scheme would see 20% of all wagers being given to the state government. This could mean upwards of £25 million a year in revenue for New Jersey.
