Ireland’s gambling laws have not been updated in over 50 years, and it seemed as though things were going to stay that way until the country started to experience trouble in recovering from the global economic crisis. Now, rather than accepting a bailout like Greece, Ireland is taking the situation into its own hands by regulating gambling and taxing the industry’s income.
Justice Minister Dermot Ahern brainstormed the idea, wanting to reform the gambling industry in order to allow for the construction of a new casino near the Dublin Motorway. The project, which is predicted to cost somewhere around €500 million, would include a 600-metre casino floor, a 500-room hotel, as well as race and golf courses.
Currently, the government is sorting through legislations, as it is rumored that more than 70 bills have been submitted. Politicians across the country are eager to get started on gambling legislation, as it could take more than a year to have new laws passed. Although there has been no mention about the prospect of online gambling, it would be a natural progression for Ireland to look into online gambling regulation next.
