On Friday, another government gaming regulator launched its own online casino website. Launched by Loto-Quebec, Espacejeux will give players from across the province the chance to wager on poker, table games and slots. They games will not be playable until December 1, but players can sign up now to get first dibs when the casino finally opens.
The site was designed to steer Quebec residents away from playing at offshore gambling websites. Not only was the province at large concerned about the dangerous consequences of associating with such websites, politicians also realized that they were letting a great deal of gaming revenue escape the province. Millions of dollars each year are spent by Quebec residents at online gambling websites, and the government wants to earn at least a small share of the revenue to put towards social programs.
The biggest concern for the team behind the project was determining a way to fight underage gambling. In order to obtain an account with Espacejeux, players must sign permission letters to confirm that they have, indeed, signed up with the website. This also cuts down on identity fraud, a common crime that takes place at online casinos.
