On the UK’s East Coast, gambling venues have been suffering greatly ever since the Gambling Act was passed in 2005. But now, new amendments to the gambling law may bear positive consequences for the industry in Withernsear and Hornsea.
In 2005, the Gambling Act placed strict regulations on arcades with casino games. As a result, hundreds of halls across the area were shut down and thousands of jobs were lost, Now, the government has decided to take a second look at the laws in order to make changes that will improve the economy.
According to Tourism Minister John Penrose, the government wants to show its support for town arcades and bingo halls. His recent proposals suggest more relaxed controls on betting maximums and prize amounts. Wagers on casino games are a significant source of income for these halls and the previously imposed limits saw a huge drop in revenue, causing many halls to close.
“These changes should help them boost their revenues”, says Penrose. He hopes that the amendments will also prevent the closures of more bingo halls and secure the jobs that locals have at existing halls. While it will be a slow process, the government hopes that the damage will be reversed and that the new amendments will make for a more profitable gambling industry on the UK’s East Coast.
