Winter Weather Hurts Bingo Halls

Thursday, December 16th, 2010 - Tammy F.

The unexpected blast of winter weather this month has caused a great deal of turmoil across the UK. Airports were closed, trains were cancelled and even bingo operators suffered from the dismal weather and snowy conditions.

According to NEBusiness.co.uk, the recent weather has caused bingo halls across the UK to lose nearly a third of their business. In the weeks leading up to the blast of winter storms, bingo halls saw a steady 5% decrease. This has been a huge blow to the land-based bingo community, which has only just started to recover from the bingo tax and the smoking ban which nearly made the activity obsolete.

It is likely that bingo fans have simply chosen to stay home and play bingo online rather than brave the icy weather conditions to get in a few games. During the winter season, online bingo websites usually offer their best promotions, knowing that they will be seeing an influx of players who are discouraged by the weather from visiting land-based halls. While this certainly does not help the condition of the land-based bingo industry, it does improve profits for the bingo market overall.

In the near year, the weather is predicted to be much milder, hopefully restoring some business and profits back to land-based bingo operators.
