Bingo plays an important part in the lives of many UK residents. Bingo halls present a safe place for friends to gather a few times a week not only to play the popular game, but also to socialize with existing friends and form new bonds.
A recent art gallery exhibition called “Bingo and Social Club” sought to explore this cultural activity through an artists eyes, as German photographer Michael Hess snapped photos at more than 60 bingo halls across the UK.
“I want people to feel that they’ve spent a night at the bingo”, he says. “To sense what it feels like to be there”.
The project began after Hess visited his first bingo hall in 2005. He was immediately fascinated by the players and the game and decided that bingo would be his next artistic subject. He notes the important social impact that bingo halls have on small communities in the UK, and wants to convey the joy and excitement of being part of a land-based game. He has travelled across the country, collecting photos of and stories from a wide range of bingo players, which he shared in the exhibition at the Outside World Gallery.
The exhibit has recently ended, but he has published a book with the photos he took. It retails for £19.99, and can be found in your local bookstore or on Amazon.co.uk.
