Protestors Fight Plans to Turn Bingo Hall into Arena

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011 - Tammy F.

Building developers are planning to turn a former Gala Bingo Hall into a nightclub and arena, but residents have vow to fight the development.

A licensing application to rename the Richmond Road venue “The Kingston Arena” was submitted on January 6th. The application also includes plans to turn the building into a space with five performance venues with a 24-hour liquor license.

Residents in the area are convinced that the new arena would bring unwanted attention to the area. The former bingo hall was a safe and friendly place for the community to congregate, but it is feared that a nightclub will regularly create all types of disturbances. On Monday, residents wishing to protest the development met to discuss their plan of action.

The developers state that noise from the Arena will not be heard on the quiet streets surrounding it. However, residents are more concerned about the type of people and crime having such a venue will bring into the area.

The battle between the residents and the developers is expected to drag on. There is no word yet on the status of the licensing application, but we will keep you posted with any new developments.
