Burlesque Bingo Plans Scrapped

Thursday, January 20th, 2011 - Alfie Williams.

Bingo hall closures have been taking place all over the UK, and developers have come up with some pretty interesting uses for the buildings in which bingo games previously took place. Movie theatres, nightclubs and performance spaces are some of the most unique ideas, but one developers plan to turn a Cambridge bingo hall into a burlesque club has been canned.

On January 9, a company named No Saints unveiled its plans to turn the Gala Bingo hall at 42 Hobson St. into club that would feature burlesque performers and other live entertainment. Since then, the company applied for a license to sell alcohol and put on live performances, but No Saints application was rejected just yesterday.

The reason for the rejection was that police in the city were worried about the negative impact a place like a burlesque club would have on the area. A late-night venue with a liquor license could bring in undesirable customers, which would be a huge culture shock to residents who are used to a quiet bingo hall being in the neighbourhood.

No future plans have been made for the old Gala Bingo hall, but it will be interesting to see suggestions from other development firms.
