The UK Gambling Commission has recently released its third annual Gambling Prevalence Survey. The report revealed various statistics about the gambling industry across the country, revealing that the lottery and scratch cards are among the most popular gambling activities.
According to the study, 55% of adults in Wales admitted to gambling at least once a month while 45% stated that they had gambled in the past week. According all of the UK, the population of gamblers increased to 73% in 2010 from 68% in 2008.
The lottery has proven to be the most popular form of gambling in Wales with 60% of gamblers taking part in the activity. Second to the lottery were scratch cards with 24% of the population and bringing up the rear is dog races with 2%.
The survey also revealed that gambling is most common the East Midlands, where 80% of adults take part in gambling activities. The location with the least amount of gamblers was London with only 58%.
The Gambling Commission was also made aware of a small but prevalent increase in gambling addiction (0.6% to 0.9%), prompting the association to vow a deeper dedication to the issue. The commission hopes to expand programs to treat and prevent problem gambling in the future.
