A report published by the AAMS which regulates and controls the entire gambling industry in Italy announced Italy is the top online gambling market in Europe. The report states revenue from overall gambling increased 13% from 2009 topping €61 billion in 2010.
The online gambling industry specifically has grown from €3.4 billion in 2009 to a €4.8 billion business in 2010. On March 10th, 2011, the AAMS released the highly anticipated Comunitaria decree to be published in the Official Journal of the Italian Government and passed into law. The decree outlines regulations for the online gambling industry in Italy including issuing new licenses and upgrading existing licenses for online gambling operators in the country. Currently, online operators are required to pay 20% tax on total gaming receipts to the Italian government.
The new regulations are intended to be unveiled gradually over the year with online poker cash games to be initiated this month and online casinos launched later in the summer. Major online gambling operators are actively pursuing licenses to operate in Italy.
The European online gambling industry is estimated at $12.5 billion. Italy is hoping efficient regulation of the industry will ensure its continued success in this lucrative market.
