This year, we’ve seen several betting scams centered around popular reality television shows. First, it was The Apprentice and now X Factor is seeing some illegal betting activity online. According to a new report, there has been some insider betting made by employees of the production company.
A popular online betting website, uncovered the scam. It seems that three employees of the company Virgin Media placed £16 000 worth of bets on the outcome of the competition. Using their access to company information, the employees found a way to interpret voting patterns by analyzing the number of calls made for each competitor.
The integrity team at the betting site, however, keeps a close eye out for any behaviour that may be deemed suspicious. They caught on quickly to the scheme that he Virgin Media employees were running and intervened accordingly.
The UK’s Gambling Commission then stepped in to void the bets made by the three individuals. They were also suspended from work and dismissed shortly thereafter. Hundreds of other sportsbettors were affected by the scam, as the odds changed significantly due to the large amounts of money placed on certain props. They will be receiving thousands of dollars in compensation in the coming weeks.
