A former regulator for the British communications industry has been appointed to head Britain’s Gambling Commission. The body acts independently to regulate commercial gambling in that country.
The Gambling Commission was set up in 2005 to ensure that the British consumer got the most from their online gambling experience. Philip Graf will also become head of the new lottery arm that will in part help to fund British athletes for the Olympics that are to be held in London next year.
The commission has handed out more than 300 licenses in Great Britain and regulates all aspects of the online gambling experience from the software providers to the online casinos and bingo rooms that are given the green light to operate and advertise in the UK. Graf was appointed to a five year term and he recently served as deputy chairman of Ofcom.
Online gambling and online poker has been regulated and licensed in the UK for some time. The model that was created there is often the one that other countries like the United States look at when states in that country consider passing online gambling legislation.
