Tesco Takes Over Bingo Hall

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011 - Alfie Williams

Tesco is the ubiquitous grocery store brand in the United Kingdom, ever-expanding to increase its presence to the people of the UK. Now, the chain has its eye on a bingo hall in Market Warsop on the outskirts of Sherwood Forest in Nottingham.

The original plan was to demolish the bingo hall and two stone cottages in the vicinity to make way for the new Tesco store. However, the company’s higher-ups discovered that there is a great deal of historic value to the buildings and has decided to take a new course of action.

The bingo hall and the surrounding cottages were actually built during the 1920s and the English Heritage wanted to preserve the buildings. Because of this, the public initially had a negative reaction to the news of the new store, but Tesco produced sketches to illustrate its plans to keep the buildings intact during construction of the new Tesco.

67% of residents in the area stated that they were in favour of the new store being built, as long as the company did not demolish the historical landmarks. Many residents were worried that building a Tesco would compromise the character of Warsop, but the new plans seem to keep the residents’ wishes in mind.
