Bingo halls across the UK are suffering from high gaming and property taxes, causing hundreds of closures across the country. While lobbyists have tried hard and failed to lower the gaming tax, operators are now taking another approach by asking local authorities to lower property taxes.
In Lethbridge, associates from Lucky’s Bingo and Winner’s Bingo have appealed to the city council, asking for an operation costs cut. Over the past years, the two bingo halls have seen a vast decline due to the smoking ban and the increased bingo tax, and the decrease in property taxes would save them £50 000 a year.
With an additional £50k in the operators’ pockets, the two bingo halls will have more money to spend on local charities and organizations. Currently, Lucky’s and Winner’s provide revenue to over 50 organizations in the area, and the decreased property taxes would ultimately benefit those in need. Whereas a single event would normally yield more £3000 for charities, the two bingo operators are not giving away significantly less.
“If they reduce those taxes, it just means that more money goes back through the charities into the community”, says Gwen Tietz, a spokesperson for Lucky’s Bingo.
The council is currently looking over the proposal, and will get back to the bingo operators by June 13th, 2011.
