The annual SCOOP online poker tournament recently took place and was a huge success attracting in excess of 400,000 online poker players to participate in 114 events with buy-ins ranging from as low as $5.50 to as much as $25,500 and prize pools exceeding $43 million. The latest satellite tournament featured strong attendance rates from competitors in the UK, Germany and Russia.

Despite the recent legal troubles online poker websites encountered in the United States, online poker rooms continue to thrive in places like the UK. SCOOP was initially launced in 2009 setting a record as the largest online poker tournament in the world. It currently headlines some of the top online poker players from across the globe.

In 2010, participants from the U.S. accounted for more than 31% of the buy-ins required to enter the tournament. This year was a different story resulting from the recent seizure of the popular online poker website by federal authorities in the United States. For that reason, there was a 13% drop-off rate for American participants in the tournament, in addition to dwindling attendance from players in Canada. These declines were not to be overshadowed by a marked increase in players from Germany, Greece and Spain, with Russian competitors duplicating their numbers from the previous year.
